E128 — Red 2G
Serious hazard
Red 2G: synthetic azo dye that converts largely to aniline in the body. EFSA (2007) concluded aniline should be regarded as a carcinogen, could not exclude a genotoxic mechanism, and could set no safe intake level — so Red 2G is of safety concern. IARC classifies aniline as Group 2A (Monographs Vol 127, 2020). The EU emergency-suspended its use in 2007 (Reg (EC) 884/2007); not an authorised EU food additive.
Avoid — an established health hazard.
